Shark Point - Long known as one of the best dive sites in the kingdom of Thailand, Shark Point or 'Hin Musang', as it pronounced in Thai, finally received recognition for its natural beauty in 1992 when it was granted official marine sanctuary status.
Like the name suggests, the 7 rocky pinnacles which make up this site are home to the beautiful Leopard shark. These docile creatures can grow up to 2.5 meters in length and Shark Point offers you one of the best opportunities of a shark encounter whilst on holiday diving around Phuket.
The soft corals are really something not to be missed on this site, attracting all the usual suspects! Schools of fusiliers and Moorish Idols patrol the reef while Travalian Barracuda make up the bigger picture.
This site comes highly recommended and even the most experienced of underwater photographers can be assured of leaving with some great shots.

King Cruiser - Before taking up service as a passenger ferry between Phuket and the Phi Phi islands the King Cruiser was originally a car and passenger ferry in Kobe, Japan, going under the name 'Oka Maru'.
One fateful day in early May 1997 the ferry struck another well-known dive site in the area; Anenome Reef, and sank nearby. Questions still remain as to how the ferry was able to hit the only very well-known underwater hazard in the area! Thankfully, all 500 people on board were rescued before the ferry went down.
Today the 85 meter long wreck lies in 33 meters of water just 1.5 hours off Phuket's east coast. Unlike many wrecks in the area, this wreck offers a full dive and divers can expect to see the following: the twin props - still in tact at 32 meters, some of the largest Lion fish anywhere in the region, and many species of schooling fish; Mackerel, Yellow Tail Barracuda and Fusiliers but to name a few.
Note: divers need to keep a close eye on what they touch as the ferry is covered in barnacles and Scorpion fish. So if you must hold onto something please look first!

Koh Doc Mai - Translated into English means Flower island and is located east of Phuket. This dive site offers good opportunities for spotting Yellow Tiger Tail Seahorses, ornate Ghost Pipefish, and a large variety of Nudibranchs. The majority of the dive is a drift wall dive with the best diving being between 6 and 18 meters. The east side has a series of caverns, one of which is easily accessible under the guidance of your dive guide. Overall this site is recognised as being excellent for macro.

Racha Yai - Racha Yai is a popular dive destination year round due to several reasons. Its proximity to Phuket, range in depth (making it ideal for beginners, those wishing to refresh their skills, or those looking for an easy dive), and for its good visibility - although this can vary according to the season.
The diversity of marine life on the reefs here is excellent. Fosters Barracuda patrol the outer reefs while Trigger fish, Trumpet fish and Damsels can be found throughout the reef. Several other local residents include giant Moray Eels, banded Sea Kraits, and Green Turtles. All the sites are complemented with beautiful topside scenery.

Racha Noi - This is a beautiful uninhabited island lying 32 kms south of Phuket. Large hard coral reefs and huge granite bolders make up the vast majority of the underwater topography and all the sites have a 'Similans-like' feel to them. Of all the local dive sites Racha Noi offers you the best chance to see a Manta Ray. Dolphins are regulary encountered on the surface and visibility normally exceeds 20 meters.

Phi Phi islands - The Phi Phi islands arguably offer one of the most spectacular backdrops to a dive site anywhere in the World. There are over 20 dive sites dotted around the Phi Phi island archipelago, most notably Bida Nok and Bida Nai. Here you will find swim throughs harbouring clouds of glass fish, look closely at the Gorgonian Sea Fans within to see Pipefish and Seahorses doing their best to remain hidden. These sites also offer the best of local diving around Phuket with their vast array of tropical fish, hard and soft coral and interesting underwater topography. |
